On Strained Shoulders

A few months ago I sprained my rotator cuff playing ultimate. that caused me to do a little digging to find out just what that injury was all about. I found that that it can take quite a while to heal back to 100%. I recall one source saying “up to six months.”

I also recall thinking that was a load of crap. I haven’t had any trouble doing day-to-day things or playing ultimate in a month or two, so about three weeks ago I decided to try to get back into the habit I was in before the injury of working out. I decided to give the 100 push-ups training plan a try.

While doing the first day of the plan, I felt a little shoulder pain. It had been a while since that had happened, but I worked through it. Wednesday rolled around, and I just couldn’t finish the second work-out — too much strain on the shoulder. I figured I’d start over a week later.

The next week? Same result. Ditto for the week after.

I guess this is where the “100%” thing comes in — for most purposes, I’m better. But I’m not 100% yet. Next week I’m going to drop to the lower work-out tier and see if maybe it will function as rehab.

Regardless, today is the AFDC’s Mid-summer Tournament, so I’ll be out at the fields for most of the day, hopefully with Scout in tow.

80 Days

So in February and March I went on a tear, blogging almost every day. Don’t Break the Chain was quite happy with me. Then in April and May I posted a combined total of once. Now DBtC is griping that I’ve been dropping the ball for 80 days.

Oops.

I’m going to see about maybe doing this blogging thing again, though.

This past weekend I went to see The Hangover. I wasn’t expecting much. Most movies I hear that much about are big let downs. That said, I loved that movie. Absolutely hilarious. Go see it.

More another day.

For now, you may heap insults on me for being such a terrible blogger.

This song has been stuck in my head all morning.

Baby’s Got It by Roman Candle

This week has been a little crazy. Lots of stuff to do at work. Ultimate this past weekend wasn’t particularly good for the shoulder, but more on that another time.

This Guy Stops Traffic

Apr. 19th, 2009 | 08:40 pm

Originally published at The Devil Went Down to Georgia. Please leave any comments there.

So there I am, on my way home from a successful attempt at walking Scout around Piedmont park with Ollie and Hattie1. I’m driving down the road at a reasonable, and legal, speed. Somewhere in the 35-40mph range, I believe. All of a sudden, some middle-aged former hippie steps out into the street holding out his hand in the universal gesture of “please run me over stop.”

What was this fine gentleman (read: raging asshole) doing? He was stopping traffic so that someone could pull out of his driveway.

He gave me about 100′ to stop. If “what moron steps out in traffic like that!?” was a valid defense to vehicular manslaughter, he’d have been plastered to the front end of my truck.

The most irritating thing about it was how close his driveway was to a stoplight. Had he waited for it to turn red, everyone would be slowing down anyway, and he could easily have let his friend out . . . but I guess it was vitally important that she get out into traffic (where she proceeded to go half the legal limit) immediately.

I’ve created this handy map to help you visualize the situation more clearly:

Can you believe this guy flipped me off just for honking at him?

  1. But a failed attempt at actually going to the Dogwood Festival which, strangely, bans dogs.

Dear Asshole at Quiznos

Today I walked down the street to Quiznos (They have a pepper bar) for lunch. This is a pretty happenin’ place most days. Lots of business folks, bums, college students, etc. The line can be long, but it tends to move pretty quickly. Today the line did not move as quickly as it should. This is an open letter to the guy in front of me today. (Warning: language only family-friendly if you happen to be The Osbornes)

Resurrection Provides Lots of Legal Questions

You know there’s a prosecutor somewhere in Maryland who is going to be telling this story at Bar Association mixers for the rest of his life:

Accepting a plea bargain that her attorney described as unprecedented in American jurisprudence, a 22-year-old Maryland woman yesterday agreed to cooperate in the prosecution of other defendants in the death of her son under the condition that charges against her be dropped if the child rises from the dead.

After hearing the news, John Grisham and Steven King decided to start discussing some sort of collaborative work.

The 28th Amendment

It’s not an interesting day on the internet unless someone has threatened to sue you.

Lately I’ve been in the market for a roommate. To facilitate that, I’ve been keeping an eye on Craigslist. Unfortunately, my user experience over there has been negatively impacted by one particular realtor. John Adams Realty seems to think it’s a good idea to repost their half-dozen ads every single day. On top of being annoying, it’s against the Terms of Service . . . so after a week of seeing this particularly annoying habit, I started flagging the posts.

Apparently I wasn’t the only one.

Ying-Yang Twins: A Translation

Someone got the bright idea to translate an episode of Cribs from whatever language the Ying-Yang Twis were speaking into honest-to-goodness English. The result is hilarious. If the video isn’t big enough to read the words on the bottom, you’re missing out.

Once you’re done laughing at the translation, watch it again to get a feel for just how ordinary and plain their house is. How did this make it onto Cribs?

Today Scout is three years old. If that whole thing about dog years being people years times seven is actually true, we’re going to have to get wasted tonight to celebrate! In honor of the furry beast, I figured I’d post a nice selection of pictures from his first day at home to his recent exploits. As usual, the whole complement of pics can be found in Scout’s Flickr Set.

You’re Out of What?

Today was the first weekend of AFDC Spring League. Lots of fun. I ended up landing funny during the first game and doing something bizarre to my (right) shoulder. Smart Pete would have stopped playing, iced it, and rested. Smart Pete doesn’t play ultimate frisbee, though, so he was at home. Instead, I played the rest of the day as I normally would, laying out, diving around, generally disregarding the shoulder pain as much as I could. I finally stopped with maybe one point left in the last game after a particularly rough layout (right onto the shoulder, I’m dumb). Afterward it only really hurt when I moved it in certain ways and at certain angles. Tonight, though, ouch. Thank god I don’t need to move my arm very often for the next several weeks.

After the games a group of us went out to La Casita for some Mexican. When we got there we decided to split a pitcher of margaritas. We were brought the house margarita on account of a miscommunication and they were pretty sub-standard. When the waitress came to take our drink orders, we asked about chips and salsa. We didn’t get chips and salsa, though, because the restaurant was out of tortilla chips. They were also out of salsa and out of queso dip.

Wait, what? How does a Mexican restaurant run out of those things? Worse: they had been out of them since the day before! Had they not heard of grocery stores for christ’s sake?

Since that nixed about half of the menu, we asked her to give us a few more minutes. When she returned, she said: “You’re going to hate me, but apparently we’re cleaning the deep fryers right now so we can’t do anything fried, either.”

So: Mexican restaurant. No chips. No salsa. No queso. Nothing deep fried. What the hell? Why were they even open?

Suffice it to say we paid for the margaritas and left. We ended up getting pizza instead, which was great.

blogging-fail

Yesterday I had all kinds of things I could have written about. There’s a Furry Convention in town this weekend, for example. I’d venture to guess that most of you don’t even know what a Furry is.

I came up with one of my best ideas ever, which was quickly given away to anyone who wants it. So much for trust and intellectual property, right?

In the end, though, I wrote nothing. I broke a 30-something day long chain of blogging, and now I have to start anew.

It’s going to take me forever to get back up to nearly 40 days again. Probably more than a month! Gah.

Falling Behind

The sisters were in town this past weekend, which was great. On account of the new job, I wasn’t able to spend Friday hanging out, but we got lots of quality time in on Saturday and Sunday before they left. Reese is adorable, of course (would you expect any less out of a Holiday?).

We went to the Georgia Aquarium, which was a test for her — several hours of wandering around without a nap or really much food to speak of. Toward the end she started getting a little cranky, but if you gave her anything to look at she calmed right down. It was really neat to see her marvel at things, although I’m sure she didn’t appreciate everything as much as she will in a few years, but all in all, it was fun — disgusting weather notwithstanding.

Reese and Scout got along wonderfully, too, which was good to see.

Today started off slowly. I didn’t get nearly as much done as I wanted to after work, I was pestered by a nagging headache all day, and I really lacked the motivation to do anything. The rain didn’t help at all. I’m hoping that tomorrow will be a little better. Still haven’t decided what, if anything, I’m going to do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day tomorrow, but if tomorrow is a repeat of today, it’ll probably be a whole lot of nothing.

I spent a little time looking at the NCAA Tourney Bracket today. I have no idea what the hell I’m going to do with it. Too many teams I know nothing about on account of not following the sport at all (on account of both of my alma maters being terrible this year). I guess that just means this will be the year I win, right?

I’m looking forward to breaking out of this early-week funk — hopefully tomorrow.

Here’s a giant list of things you should have already seen on the internet: YouShouldHaveSeenThis.com.

There were five or ten things on that list that I hadn’t seen before, like George Lucas in Love.

There were also a few old favorites like Bubb Rubb and gay Mount Everest, but there were some left off, like The Song of the Count (Censored).

Your homework for the week is to check off all of that list.

Kecia, Ara, and Reese have made it into town. We chilled yesterday after they got into town and watched every funny YouTube video ever.

I’ve posted this one before, but it never gets old . . .

Tomorrow I think we’re going to see what Reese thinks of the aquarium and hopefully get to see a law school friend who is in town to watch the ACC Tourney. Fun times.

Finding My Keys

Mar. 12th, 2009 | 09:09 am

Originally published at The Devil Went Down to Georgia. Please leave any comments there.

I was making good time this morning. I woke up basically when I wanted to, I didn’t waste too much time going through my daily website visits, and Scout was being reasonable. I was on my way out the door when I realized that I didn’t have my keys.

I checked my desk. My keys were not there.

I checked the kitchen counter. My keys were not there.

I checked the coffee and end tables in the living room. My keys were not there.

I checked the hook by the door where my keys are supposed to go. You know they weren’t there.

So where did I end up finding them? In my fucking closet. My closet. On top of a pile of t-shirts. WTF? Usually when I find something that I had lost it sparks the memory of how the thing ended up in the place I found it. This morning? No earthly idea how they got there.

I blame the dog.

Excitement Abounds

Originally published at The Devil Went Down to Georgia. Please leave any comments there.

Tomorrow my sisters get to town for a weekend of family bonding. They’ll have my freakin’ adorable niece in tow, which will be awesome. I’m really looking forward to seeing the three of them.

This week has been odd. Getting used to going back to work, trying to get back on a sleep schedule, working on a number of things I have due, and trying to maintain some sort of balance with doing stuff that isn’t like work has been tough.

I’m hoping to get some good pictures this weekend of Kecia, Ara, and Reese and get to relax a bit so that next week I can get into a more steady schedule and feel like I have a little time to do things I want to do.

I’m trying to come up with something more interesting for Ye Olde Blogge to cut down on the number of boring “here is my life”, gold-star type posts, but so far I have found nothing.

Ideas?
